Klooks Kleek Modern Jazz Club, West Hampstead

There is a new book out published by The History Press, written by Dick Weindling & Marianne Colloms recording the extensive history of Klooks Kleek at the Railway Hotel in West Hampstead. The book is entitled Decca Studios and Klooks Kleek.

The John West Group receives a mention as the Group that was the first house band to feature when the club opened on 11th January 1961. Featured with the band was top British Tenor Sax Player, Don Rendell. Don was followed in subsequent weeks by Jazz Greats including, Ronnie Ross, Glen Hughes, Dick Morrissey and many others.

Klooks Kleek ran from 1961 until 1970 at the Railway Hotel next door to Decca Studios. The Club featured jazz for four years when it switched from jazz to Rhythm & Blues.

Dick Jordan and Geoff Williams, who ran the club, share their recollections in the book. Artists including David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, Tom Jones and the Moody Blues played at Decca. Ronnie Scott, The Cream, Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Elton John, Rod Stewart and Stevie Wonder all performed at Klooks. The book recalls a unique musical heritage. The Crown, St Margarets, Twickenham.

Ron paid a visit to this pub recently. It is now part of a small group that specialises in converting old pubs into modern accommodation serving quality food at reasonable prices. The group now has five pubs in operation in and around the Guildford, Woking, Laleham and Twickenham areas. The reason for Ron's visit was to check out the changes compared to how the pub looked over 50 years ago when The John West Group ran the Modern jazz Club Jazz at the Crown there in the early 60's. The good news is that the back room where the jazz was performed has been sensitively brought up to date but retains all its original features.

Ron was so impressed with the ambience of The Crown and the food quality that he is planning to organise a reunion lunch there with some of the jazz fans that supported the band back then many of whom he remains in contact with today.
