  SINGING WITH THE CHAMPS

  Future History

Garry Lloyd guests with Steel Garry Lloyd guests with the
2010 UK Barbershop gold medallists

Impudence is occasionally rewarding. As a novice baritone at Harmony College, a learning weekend in Nottingham University, I watched Steel the 2010 gold medal l barbershop quartet performing, to deafening applause.

A host of lesser quartet singers in the audience were offered an invitation to sing with the champs. "Who's first?" Steel asked. Stunned silence. Impertinence prevailed. "What about me?" I volunteered. They beckoned me up, their baritone surrendered his place. I explained I had never done this before, and only been barbershopping for a few months.

They turned to the video team who were to record the experience. "We may need a second take," they jested.
We didn't. Here's the result. Judge for yourself.

Garry Lloyd guests with Ad Hocs Garry Lloyd guests with the Ad Hocs

Our lyricist Garry Lloyd has been extending his barbershop experience further still.
He entered The Surrey Fringe Quartet Competition, in Guildford, in which nine quartets from six counties took part. As a novice baritone Garry was entered in the "scratch quartet" section, which partners individuals with any others prepared to perform with them.

He was introduced to three experienced singers from a Quartet known as Forte. Not only did they win the main event, but they also claimed first prize with Garry, replacing their own baritone, and performing as the Ad Hocs. He's pictured with James Harris, bass, Tom Peters, tenor, and Graham Frampton, lead.
